The "V" stands for "vertical".  VLOOKUP, one of the lookup and reference functions, when you need to find your desired data Excel function to lookup and retrieve data from a specific column in the table range.  

VLOOKUP function looks up a value in the first column of the specified range of cells and returns a value in the same row from another column. Before finding data organize your data so that the value you look up is to the left of the return value that you want to find.

VLOOKUP finds data as an approximate match (TRUE) and exact match (FALSE), VLOOKUP also supports wildcards (* ?) for partial matches.

optionally specify TRUE for an approximate match or FALSE for an exact match).

Purpose of use VLOOKUP

Simply Lookup a value in a table range ( Excel Database )  of cells and return matching lookup values from the left-most column.

VLOOKUP Syntax

=VLOOKUP (value, table, col_index, [range_lookup])

Arguments explain

value - The value to look for in the first column of a table.

table - The table from which to retrieve a value.

col_index - The column in the table from which to retrieve a value.

range_lookup - [optional] TRUE = approximate match (default). FALSE = exact match.

Example :

Imagine that your company ( HR)  keeps a spreadsheet of total employee salary information with a different category for Accounts Division. At the end of each month, The HR manager sends your division a list of total div employee salaries. It is your job to complete the remark employee to find out salary from the total database which may be a thousand or so many.

Don't worry about this finding just simple  by the VLOOKUP function                          

Following the image see that here total employee salary information on the left side is called a table array and on the right side, some employee salary data need to look up from this table array.  

So as per VlOOKUP syntax here lookup value is the employee name and first lookup gross salary from the table array that can be selected as per your desired selected table array range or from the top of a column or can create a static name range. If the table array range is selected as the desired selected range then using the dollar sign ($ ) by F4 for fixing the data range that helps to find absolute information with not changing your reference array.

following image see that gross salary data found from table array that is on column two from employee name so put here 2 ( col_index_number) for the return value, remember as per column from employee name just put following finding column number and then range_ lookup that means finding data will be an exact match or Approximate match from table array.
